We invite you to contribute any history pertaining to the Northwest including Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and British Columbia. Your contribution might be a biography of someone you know who helped shaped your community (even your own). Or perhaps you would like to outline the history of your community from it's incorporation to present day, or author an article on some industry, event or influence that changed the community.

This will bring you to a new page with a text box containing the editable text of the original page. Make the changes and additions you want. You should write a short edit summary which should answer the question, "Why did you make this edit?". It is a good thing to fill in the Edit Summary field so that your fellow contributors understand what has changed when going through the history of the page.

If you are asking "what is a Wiki"... A "Wiki" is a web site that can be edited directly by people browsing it. That way, they can add new content, correct errors or inaccuracies, and add their own comments, among other things. It is not hard to do. Simply click on the "edit this page" tab at the top of a page. (You will be asked to login.) The word "Wiki" comes from the Hawaiian word for "quick".

One of the early uses for this Wiki will be to document Northeast Washington History. You can follow this link directly without knowing anything further about editing a Wiki.

There are a number of things to know about formatting, linking articles and putting them in appropriate categories, but don't feel you have to know any of these things! Someone who is more familiar with the wiki software can come along someday and contribute their wiki expertise - the content is much more important - not refining the look of the contribution itself.

Wiki's develop faster when people fix problems, correct grammar, add facts, make sure the language is precise, and so on. Expect everyone to be bold. It's okay. It is what everyone expects. How many times have you read something and thought, "Why aren't these pages copy-edited?" This Wiki not only allows you to add, revise, and edit the article - it wants you to do it. It does require some amount of politeness, but it works. You'll see.

Also, feel free to write the webmaster for advice or assistance mailto:webmaster@theheritagenetwork.org on how to do things.
